Captain Ron Arens and First Mate Carol King arrived in the Caribbean in 1982 after extensive sailing in the Pacific, Central and South America and the Bahamas. After arriving on St. Thomas, they each started their own businesses. Carol had Red Hook Mail Services and East End Secretarial Services and managed Red Hook Plaza. Ron had a bareboat company and later started Latitude 18 Restaurant and Bar. While operating these businesses, they took breaks to go sailing whenever possible, including trips up the East Coast and a transatlantic to France. But they kept returning to the Virgin Islands as they have found it to be the best sailing in the world -- constant trade winds, clear warm water for snorkeling and swimming and gorgeous beaches.
In 2001, they decided that their businesses were taking up too much of their time and they decided to sell them. They then sailed to Florida, bought an older RV, circumnavigated North America (Florida to Ontario, Canada to British Columbia to Baja, Mexico, and back to Florida). While traveling, they were looking for a potential new place to call home. They were lured back to the Virgin Islands.
When they returned, the duo decided to share their sailing experience and enthusiasm with others and started Alaunt Charters. After several years of year-round charters, they began taking summers off. They purchased another motorhome and now spend their summers sailing throughout the Windward and Leeward Islands and visiting friends and relatives and exploring the U.S. mainland. In the late fall, they return to St. Thomas to begin their next day-sail season.
Alaunt is a Gallant 53 sailboat built in England in 1968. She was originally built for the governor of Bermuda and has quite a checkered history. Visit their website at www.alauntcharter.com to learn more. They invite visitors and locals alike to join them for full and half-day sails that include food, beverages and snorkel gear. Give them a call (340-771-8044) or email email@example.com. Ron and Carol say they'd love to take you sailing!
