Emancipation Garden commemorates the emancipation of slaves by Danish Governor Peter von Scholten on July 3, 1848.

It is located near the waterfront in Charlotte Amalie, adjacent to Post Office Square, Fort Christian, and Main Street. The park is a popular spot for visitors and locals to relax amongst the great historical structures of downtown. It is also right next to Vendor’s Plaza, where tourists can purchase local gifts and treats. Emancipation Garden plays host to many important events year-round, including the inauguration ceremonies for the governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Emancipation Day festivities. Its lights and decorations are not to be missed during the holidays.
