Legislature Building

Legislature Building, St. Thomas, USVI

St. Thomas’s Legislature Building originally served as a barracks for Danish troops, dating back to the 1800’s.

Later, it once again served as a barracks, this time for the U.S. Marine Corps after the transfer of the territory from the Danish West Indies to the United States in 1917. Since 1970 it has served as the offices for the U.S. Virgin Islands Legislature, comprised of 15 senators representing St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas. Hearings held in the building are open to the public. The Legislature Building is located right on the historic Charlotte Amalie waterfront, with a courtyard and stunning views of the harbor, including the West Indian Company Dock, Yacht Haven Grande, and Hassel Island.
