St. Thomas, Virgin Islands is an American territory with a population of about 52,000. It is located just east of Puerto Rico in the Leeward Island chain with the Atlantic Ocean to the North and the Caribbean Sea to the south. The other two US Virgin Islands are St. John to the east and St Croix to the south. The language used is English and the currency is the dollar.
Most major east coast airlines either have connecting or direct flights from major US cities to Cyril E King Airport on St. Thomas. Transportation on St. Thomas is either by rental cars or taxis and safari buses. People traveling to St. John can catch a ferry to St. John. Seaplanes can be used to travel between St. Thomas and St. Croix which is 45 miles south.
The largest town is Charlotte Amalie which is also the capital of the Virgin Islands. Referred to as "Downtown", it hosts "Main Street" where you will find the world famous duty-free shopping (where you can shop for watches, jewelry, perfume, linens and liquor all at duty-free prices and no sales tax!) and has been the site of active trade since the early 1700's. Historic "Downtown" has plenty of great restaurants, many of them housed in the colonial Danish architecture buildings. The other major shopping districts are Yacht Haven Grande, Havensight and Crown Bay Center.
